The poet José-Maria de Heredia, born in Cuba in 1842, adopted France as his country in
1861. When his collected poems Les Trophées were published in 1893, he was seen as a
leading figure among the Parnassian poets. Admitted to the Académie Française in 1894,
he was buried in 1905 in the cemetery of Bonsecours, alongside his mother, in accordance
with his wishes.
