ABBAYE DE BONPORT
stone, nature and history. The legend tells that Richard the Lionheart founded the abbey
after being saved from drowning in the Seine. Even if history cannot endorse the miracle, it
does confirm the political will of the Duke of Normandy and King of England to place men he
could trust in charge of this strategic site on the Seine before his departure for the Crusades.
He chose Cistercian monks, who built an abbey on a scale to suit their mission. Bonport
Abbey is one of the few Cistercian abbeys in Normandy to retain its medieval monastic
buildings: the chapter house, monks’ house, dormitory, kitchens, and in particular the magnificent 13th-century vaulted refectory, built overlooking the river. The large wooded park of the abbey lands offers views over the Seine valley.
